St. Stephen’s-On-The-Hill United Church is not only celebrating its past, but its future.

Since 1958, the church has worked to bring faith into the community and bring people from all walks of life together. For the staff at the church, their 50th anniversary highlights their dedication to the community and their cause.

“Our 50th anniversary is a celebration of our congregation and each other,” says organizer Karen Penseney.

The church has held anniversary celebrations throughout the year, culminating with the St. Stephen’s-on-the-Hill 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Dance. The event takes place on Saturday, November 22 at the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club.

The work accomplished by the church wouldn’t be possible without the minister & congregation’s support and commitment, says Penseney.s, says Penseney.

“A lot of churches have ebbed and flowed, but we have a solid core of people have a vision and focus of what we are here to do.”

During their 25th anniversary, the staff raised money to expand the building. In June, St. Stephen’s created Project Thinspace, a development initiative that includes an exterior courtyard and labryinth built on the church grounds.

“We wanted to build something that would commemorate our 50 years and allow people to look back on our heritage,” says Penseney, who noted that the church’s outreach projects and service helps set them apart from others.

“People feel a strong sense of hospitality and caring when they come here. We are a more minimalist and multi-functional church—it sets the tone for who we are.”

More information about the anniversary can be found in their special newsletter, available at the church.

St. Stephen;s will also hold the CBC’s A Christmas Carol, a production of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, on Sunday, December 7. Proceeds from the event will go to The Compass Food Bank in Port Credit.
