2008 marks Streetsville's 150th year as a village, and there are events planned throughout 2008 in celebration. But your help is needed!

On Saturday, June 28, the Anniversary Committee is planning on holding Streetsville's largest Used Book Sale along Main Street.

“We're asking the public to donate 'gently used' and cared for books,” explains committee member Sue Andrews,

“The plan is to have at least 50 tables filled with reasonably priced books,” adds Bernice Cunningham, “with paperbacks selling for $1 to $2 and hardcovers for $3."

All of the proceeds from the Used Book Sale, which will be held on the same day as the Business Association's Sidewalk Sale, will go to The Credit Valley Hospital's Pediatric Department.

In conjunction with the Sidewalk Sale and Book Sale, there will also be a BBQ courtesy of the Streetsville Lions Club and book readings by local businesses.

And although they have lofty expectations—Andrews and Cunningham hope to collect 12,000 to 15,000 books by the sale date—there are some exceptions to what they will accept.

“No encyclopedias, please, or text books," says Cunningham. "We also don't need or want magazines—especially National Geographics—or Reader's Digest Condensed Books.”

And make sure your donations aren't moldy, please.

Also in high demand at the moment are boxes—Prime Chicken boxes of Maple Lodge boxes are the perfect size to store the books in until the sale.

“We're also wondering if anyone can donate local storage space for the books,” says Andrews.

“A 12 by 36 storage room would be ideal, or else a large trailer with a hitch.”

Drop off your books at one of three locations: The Beer Store at 65 Queen Street North, Cairns at 10 Kerr Street South in Streetsville, or at Queen Spectacular at 201 Queen Street South.

If you're unable to drop off your donation, call Kristy at The Booster at 905-273-8234 and make arrangements to have your books picked up.

Andrews and Cunningham are encouraged by the number of books they're received so far.

"I'd say we have at least 6000 to 7000 already,” reports Andrews.

“But our goal is to give $10,000 to Credit Valley Hospital,” adds Cunningham, “so we need more!”
